It's OCTOBER! I LOVE the fall. I am missing New England and Utah this time of year, though. I love the cooler weather. It's still in the 80s here, but on Friday it is supposed to drop down to 68! Yes! I bought some boots a while back and I can't wait to wear them once it gets cooler. I will probably have to wear them during the Texas 'winter' instead of fall.
I am finally feeling better after having the flu for over a week. I still have a cough and a stuffy nose a bit, but compared to last week, I feel so much better. The cough is just more annoying than anything.
Last night I went to the church (while Jon had YMs), and practiced the piano in the chapel. I love playing on a 'real' piano, especially a baby grand. I was able to practice some hymn arrangements and primary songs, etc. Some day, I will have a baby grand piano. :)
I really like our ward. The RS is in charge of the Cake Walk for the Fall Festival (which is really Trunk or Treat with other activities). I worked on that yesterday for a while and made the numbers/pieces for the circle. I volunteered to find some kid-friendly Halloween music also - I didn't think Primary songs would be quite as fun to walk around to in a circle. That may be a little harder to find, though.
I think for Christmas Jon and I will probably buy items for 72 hour kits for ourselves. I also think whenever I go grocery shopping, I will pick up something extra, like batteries or matches or small flashlights, etc. I will slowly get everything we need!
Here are some more things on my 'grown up' Christmas list:
- color printer (Pinterest has so many cute free signs, etc. I want to print them out!)
- temple clothes (I always rented clothes in Provo, but here in the SA temple they don't rent them out. That may be my gift to myself)
- Sea World passes
- clear pantry/food canisters - ones with the tight lids so I can put sugar/flour/brown sugar/etc into them
- a robe
- fabric (so then mumsy or one of my talented sisters can make some pillow slipcovers for me:))
Our apartment is small, but I am still going to SOMEHOW put up our Christmas tree. I'm not sure where yet, but I will find a spot somewhere. :) Even if we have to get rid of the dining room table for a month, haha.

A Bug's Life
Texas is hot. And humid. This first week of September we will see nothing but triple digit - 100 degrees plus. I like cold weather - especially since I consider September to 'fall'. I love sweaters, sweatshirts, boots, crunchy leaves, apple cider, the smell of the season, pumpkins, apple pie, etc. It's just too hot to do anything outside right now. Jon and I are waiting until it cools down to go walk around The Alamo and do more outdoor 'touristy' things. It's hard to enjoy when you are sweating buckets.
Texas is nice. The people are nice (except when the people driving big trucks think they can always just cut you off because you are smaller). I really like our ward - it's pretty small, but everyone has been so welcoming. (Members have told us over and over again how happy they are to have us there!)
Texas also has a lot of BUGS. In our apartment, we usually only see huge Texas-size crickets (they are huge and gross and black and they jump on you!!) Yesterday one decided to jump into the shower with me...sick nasty. We also have a lot of earwigs. Blech. It seems when I sit to type lately, I can feel those creepy crawlers going up my leg. Ok, usually it's just my imagination, but it has happened a couple of times! So now I just assume that whenever I have an itch, it's a bug.
But the other morning (really early) I was rudely awakened by another bug crawling up my arm. I swapped it away and crawled (more like crazily climbed) over Jon and stood on the floor on his side of the bed. He woke up, obviously, and calmly turned on the lights to find it. I quietly yelled (I didn't want to wake any neighbors) "THERE WAS A CRICKET CRAWLING UP MY ARM!" Well, Jon found the bug. He said it wasn't a cricket. I told him not to tell me what it was. Then, after watching him smash something with his shoe a few times, and say "Sick" a few times under his breath, I asked him if it was a spider. He said no. 10 more seconds pass. "Was it a grasshopper?" "Nope..." I think for a few more seconds, and then:
"Was it a COCKROACH?"
"YUP!"
I just shudder thinking about it. It was HUGE. Those crickets are huge, and this was probably the same size, but to me I think it was DOUBLE the size (Jon and I have different accounts of how big it really was.)
I haven't seen any since then (and I hope to never see one again). How do those things get in? And how dare they? I believe that all insects, like horses, know when you are afraid of them. They just have a sense. (That's probably why I fell off a horse during my horse back riding lessons back in the day, too. I was scared the whole time during those lessons...) Spiders, cockroaches, crickets, caterpillars, flying things - I know they are personally attacking me.
Growing up, we had to weed the garden. And the flowers on the hillside. And everything else that was a plant. :) (I'm sure I only did about 5% of the work, but it sure seemed like a lot!) But if I saw a spider while weeding, I would physically shudder and just walk away. (Though for some reason, I wasn't afraid of worms. I would just pick them up and throw them across the garden at Emma. Haha I was such a brat!) I must have arachnophobia.
Here are some everyday happenings:
- applying for jobs. I have applied for about 7 this week so far. It's frustrating (I either need to learn Spanish or need to lower my job standards, or something like that).
- indexing. I have been doing indexing for the church (genealogy). I love it so far. My goal is to do 2000 per month. I wish I could get paid to do it! (I love it as a service, but I would love to do it as a job, also!) I love listening to The Cambridge Singers or Katherine Jenkins (opera singer from England) when I index. It's just beautiful and helps me concentrate.
- hanging out with the missionaries. Well, more like having them over for dinner and also going to visit some inactive families. (Last Friday we went to the house of a lady who the missionaries are teaching. Her mom was there and made us the BEST mexican food for dinner. I think it took me over 45 minutes to eat the one plate. It was a lot of food, plus I am a slow eater. The missionaries and Jon started the lesson while I just kept on eating at the table by myself...) (One of the missionaries also thought it necessary to share that over the pulpit this past Sunday during testimony meeting. Hmmm.)
- exercising. I started my 'weight loss' blog last month, and have been keeping up with it every day for the past 3.5 weeks. I have lost 6 pounds so far. My goal is to lose 2 per week, so it's going slowly but surely. Some days I do elliptical, or play Just Dance 3 on the Wii. I also do ab work and weights 5 days per week). So far there hasn't been a big change, but I feel better (if not physically, at least mentally).
- church. I am the 1st counselor in RS. On average, there are about 8 sisters in RS on Sunday. (This past Sunday, when the RS sisters were given 10 minutes to bear their testimony at the end of the lesson, one sister stood up to share. The rest of us had already shared in Sacrament Meeting! It was funny. I think we were all sitting there thinking the same thing, until finally after a few minutes of silence, a sister pointed out that we had all shared!) I also play the piano for it, and it's hard to hear anyone over the piano. I play loud, so the sisters will sing loud! But maybe it's a bit TOO loud... :)
- making yummy food. I really like to cook. I love trying new recipes. Nothing hard, but just simple, delicious dinners. We had this last Sunday with the missionaries: Slow Cooker Chicken Caesar Sandwiches. So easy and I really like them. I have made them a few times now, and it's nice to have leftovers for Jon to bring for lunch during the week, and for me to have at home! I try to sometimes make up my own recipe for things, but it just never tastes as good as the original recipe. It's just not a talent I possess :)
- I miss everyone. I miss my family, I miss Jon's (also MY) family, I miss my friends from Utah, I miss Elza who is out in Virginia now. I miss being comfortable - I knew where things were in Provo/Orem. I could get around easily (especially on the grid system!) I miss my coworkers. I miss just being able to 'run over' to someones house for a quick visit. And if they weren't home, no big deal, because everyone was so close! I miss living so closely to family - it was such a blessing to have had the Butlers live only 15-20 minutes away for the first 5.5 years of living in Utah! I could go over there whenever and was always welcome and could play with the kids whenever I wanted. I miss all of my nieces and nephews. I miss my parents and grandparents in Pennsylvania. I miss Otis. I miss having dinner at Mom and Dad Knight's home (and trying not to laugh during the prayer - we were so irreverent, especially when I was trying to make a good impression! I blame Jon and his brother Matt, haha). I miss having a job. BUT I know it's all a part of growing up - people move away and do their own thing. I wish it was a rule that all families and friends had to live in the same state. Then I could see everyone whenever I wanted.
That's mostly it for now. I still like our apartment - I cleaned out the spare room, so now it looks like an actual room and not just a place for storage. It's now the library/office/exercise room/movie collection/tools/craft room.

First Week
We have been in San Antonio a week now. So far, I love it. I have unpacked a lot, but the other bedroom in our apartment is still half-full of boxes. I have to figure out where to put it all still - we are missing all of that cabinet space from the Provo house!
The drive out here was pretty nice. We took our time and I only had to drive 2 hours of it! Jon's brother Aaron drove my car, his dad drove the truck, and Jon and I were in his car. It all worked out perfectly. We stopped in Roswell, NM museum (we were looking for the alien museum, but ended up in the historical museum instead - oh well), and we also went to the Carlsband Caverns. It was so cool - the elevator took us 700 feet below the ground and we went into "The Big Room" of the cavern (there are a ton of different rooms, but we were in a bit of a hurry and only went through this one - it still took over an hour). The path is over a mile long - it was HUGE! We packed our camera so we didn't take any pictures, but here are some pics I found on the internet:
I love where we live. We live in a brand new apartment complex, and we feel really safe here and so far everyone has been so nice. The pool is pretty and I love going swimming in the evenings with Jon. Shopping is only a mile down the street - there are a ton of shops, including WalMart and Target and the grocery store and a bunch of smaller places and restaurants. We live only 6 miles from downtown, so we get there in 10 minutes or less. We have already tried Shipley's donuts, which Emma said were the best - and they were! Mmm they were so good.
Last night Ben and Tasha were in town and we went downtown and walked along the River Walk and went to one of the Mexican restaurants and had a delicious dinner next to the water. It has tons of restaurants along it and I loved the all the bustling of the people. We then walked up the block and saw The Alamo and right across from it they have a bunch of places like Ripley's Believe It or Not, a wax museum, and other odd places, which might be fun to stop in another time. :) The ocean is two hours south of us and off of that is South Padre Island. We can't wait to go there to spend a weekend.
We went to church on Sunday, and I think I will love this ward. Everyone was so inviting and kind, and it's nice and small. The Relief Society sisters cheered when I said we had moved into the ward. The counselor I sat next to said there is only an average of 8-10 sisters in RS on Sundays. Jon and I both got warned that we may have at least 2 callings each. I already know they need a RS pianist... I do like smaller wards, and I am excited to get to know more people and be more involved.
Today, my plan is to unpack a little more, and lay out by the pool and finish reading 'The Secret Garden' (I don't remember what the movie/book is about at all! So far, so good). And hopefully I will unpack the camera so I can take a video of our new apartment and take some pictures of our activities!! I miss Utah and I miss my friends, but so far I am loving this new adventure!

San Antonio, Here We Come!
Jon and I have decided to move to San Antonio!! We will be leaving in less than a month! I have already packed away movies, throw pillows and blankets, a lot of books, and I cleaned out my 'craft' desk (more like my desk drawers filled with 'junk' - how did fingernail clippings get in there? Gross). It's a little overwhelming, but it's so nice to get rid of stuff, too.
I am really excited to move and to have a new adventure, but I am sad to leave friends and family. I am comfortable here and I like Utah, but I need a change. Anyone can come visit us whenever!!
Here are some reasons why I am excited about moving to San Antonio:
The Alamo:
The Riverwalk:
The Riverwalk at Christmas time:
The Majestic Theater:
SeaWorld:
Reasons I am NOT excited about Texas:
- just type "Bugs and Spiders in Texas" in Google and there you will find about a million reasons
- being sweaty all the time
- not having snow at Christmas
I think the pros outweigh the cons (plus, if we live on the second floor of an apartment building, I think the bugs will have a harder time getting in!) But I will have some (ok, a LOT) of RAID on hand just in case.

History
My father-in-law, Boyd, loves family history and has a lot of old documents and some journals. I love looking through it all and seeing what things cost back in the day, looking at their beautiful handwriting, what activities they did, etc. He has his grandma's journal, and he is letting me type it all up for him. It's from 1938.
So far, I have loved reading it. His grandma certainly did a lot of ironing, washing, cleaning, and mending. And she always had visitors. They often took drives up the canyon. Here are some of my favorite things I have learned so far:
- She seemed to always be shopping for a dress, but could never find one
- I learned that a 'milk nickel' is chocolate coated ice cream bar (a friend bought her one)
- she was upset with another woman for not coming to a party, and wrote "...(she) would not come. We were all angry and think she is ignorant and sadly lacking in courtesy. From now on she is mud in my eye." :)
- she was voted in as the county corresponding secretary for the Stake Pioneer Camp
- it rained a lot in the month of May in 1938
- she visited friends who were sick and helped out a lot at funerals
- Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day
- they went to the movies sometimes; they saw "The Hurricane", made in 1937.
- She mentioned how her husband was excited about the Shmeling vs. Louis boxing match
- She once wrote "While the children went to Sunday School, dad and I jazzed around in the car all morning". I looked that one up - Jazzed around meant 'to move about aimlessly or without any destination.' So pretty much, just hanging out in the car, driving around. Jon and I do that, too, sometimes! I love that the kids went to church and the parents would go for a drive :)
Anyway, I'm not even half done yet, but so far I have loved reading it and typing it up. Her handwriting can get a little hard to read sometimes, and I'll have to ask Boyd about a few names - is it Montel or Martel? And her capital D's look like some sort of cursive U with a squiggly line. I had to get used to that pretty fast!

Decisions, Decisions
I have no idea how much longer we will be in Utah. Jon has been offered jobs in San Antonio, New Jersey/Philadelphia, North Carolina, and is flying to Denver on Monday to interview with a company that is located in Virginia. The offer in Texas is the best deal so far, but we are waiting for the offer email from North Carolina. If it's about the same, my vote is to go there! San Antonio seems fun and people who have visited or lived there say they love it, but I would really like to be closer to my parents - and the beach. Washington DC is 5 hours away from the town, so that would be a nice weekend trip, too. But there is definitely change in the air! I've already packed a few boxes!
This house is in Clinton, NC - the same town where the job offer is. Isn't it beautiful?!
Will someone please lend me $325,000?
I will pay you back slowly but surely.

I'm BAAACK!
It's been over four months since I blogged last, and Blogger looks totally different! I miss too much when I don't update!
For this update, I am using the questions Megan and my sister Hannah tagged me in. First, I'll start with Megan's questions, then Hannah's. So now everyone can know me even BETTER :) .
1. What is your biggest fear?
Spiders - I think everyone knows how deathly afraid I am of spiders. My eyes seem to know exactly where they are in the room, too. I think they gravitate to any mark on the wall, any slight movement of the wind, etc. I just know where they are!
2. If you could throw yourself your own birthday party, what would the theme be?
Hmmm - I'm not really into themes, but I would love just to have a bbq and play games like bocce ball and croquet and have a firepit in the evening and talk to good friends and family.
3. Have you become the person you thought you'd be ten years ago?
No.
4. What was the most romantic date you've ever been on?
Probably going up the canyon in the winter with all of the snow and having a campfire and snuggling in a blanket. (And having my first kiss, of course!)
5. What nicknames do you have?
B, Molly B, McButter, MB, Mollz, 'Mowy' (by my cute nephews and nieces how have a hard time with the 'L' sound).
6. If you were left a fortune what would be the very first purchase?
If paying off debt doesn't count, I would buy a plane ticket to any 3rd world country and build an orphanage. These are the beds I would build for it:
7. Where do you go when you just want to be alone?
I love to go for drives, just to see the beautiful nature, but also to listen to music, think, and pray.
8. What is the one essential makeup item that you can't live without?
Foundation - I need to cover up!
9. How often do you talk to your mom?
It used to be every day (sometimes a couple of times a day!), but now the average is every other day.
10. Would you willingly go back to relive your high school years?
No way.
11. What is your favorite computer font?
Times New Roman or Cambria
And now, onto Hannah's questions:
1. What is a talent that you wish you had?
I wish I could play the piano really well. I also wish I was more social (that's a talent, I think!)
2. What is your biggest fear?
Like the question before, spiders. But another fear would be driving on the freeway. I used to love driving back and forth, but for some reason, I get nervous lately. Probably because Jon always drives, and because there is so much construction, AND because Utah drivers are the worst.
3. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be (besides scriptures)?
This is hard because I like a lot of books, so I am cheating and naming a few:
I really love 'Fifteen' by Beverly Cleary. It's an easy read, and it's just so cute, especially for the hopeless teenage romantic (and obviously for 24 year olds like myself).
I love reading stories from The Book of Virtues and The Moral Compass.
AND I love Gone With the Wind. AND self-help and relationship books.
Haha, so I really don't know which one I would choose.
4. Let's say you had to live the life of a TV character (past or present). Who would you be?
Lucy Ricardo. I would have great friends to hang out with and always go on double dates with, I would travel, I would shop a lot, and I would have husband with a beautiful voice who owns a night club!
5. What is your dream vacation?
I have always wanted to go tour all over Europe, especially Italy and Greece. Stay in cute B+Bs, walk on the cobblestone streets, eat yummy food, drive through the countryside, eat brunch at an outdoor cafe', etc. AND I would love to go to the Carib Also, to go on a safari in Africa, and see all of the beautiful animals (especially the giraffes and elephants, my favorite!)
6. Do you have any recurring dreams (either exactly the same, or just about a certain person/situation)? If so, what are they about?
I have had a dream twice about a big white farm house with it's own little pond in the front. I don't know what it's about or anything, but I just have seen this house both times. (Better than last nights' dream - X-Files meets Downton Abbey! It was the WEIRDEST dream I have ever had, I think.)
7. What is your dream job?
I have always wanted to travel and help people. I would love to open my own non-profit organization, or work for the United Nations in a 3rd world country.
8. What would you choose to be your last meal?
Mom's stuffed shells, mom's homemade bread with rhubarb jam, ice cold skim milk, and watermelon. And an ice cream cone for dessert. :) Oh and throw in some chocolate covered gummy bears.
9. What is the best gift you've ever received?
I love the calendar mom made us with everyone's birthdays and anniversarys. Also, the speakers mom and dad gave me for a graduation present. I love listening to music, and they are perfect and crisp and they can get loud!
10. Describe how you would like your life to be in 10 years.
I would love to have a few kids, live in a comfortable house with a big yard and garden, and go on fun family vacations. Also, by then I hope to have traveled at least once outside of the country.
I promise to blog more! Life has been going by so fast - Jon and I have been married for almost a year, Christmas has come and gone, birthdays for both of us, trips to Denver and Idaho, applying for jobs, etc.
I love these! |
So pretty (Tuscany) |
Look how cute it is! |
To see everything and to help people and have adventures |

Ok, it may not be THIS comfortable...but a girl can dream. |
